A trip down memory lane – favourite singers of the 60s.

Still busy helping my daughter with her new baby so below is a post I prepared earlier. Do hope you enjoy it and maybe it will transport you back in time and bring to mind your own favourite songs and evoke happy memories.

Music is an amazing medium for generating strong emotions linking the present to the past. I recently took a trip down memory lane and listened to a few of my favourite songs from the 60s. I guess I was into France and the French language even then.

First up was Francoise Hardy, the French singer, actress and astrologer (didn’t know that). She grew up in Paris and received a guitar on her sixteenth birthday as a reward for passing her baccalaureat. After a year at the Sorbonne she answered a newspaper advertisement looking for young singers. Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961 and the rest is history. My favourite song is “Tous les garçons et les filles”.

Next the celebrated duo Serg Gainsberg, the bad boy of songwriting of the era, and Jane Birkin, his then girlfriend. The song “je t’aime….moi non plus” was the record that established their notoriety. What I did not know was that the track was originally written for and recorded with Brigitte Bardot. However it was not released due to the objections of Bardot’s then husband. When the Birkin version was finally released, the track was banned  in several countries on account of its eroticism which was deemed offensive and it was denounced by the vatican. Despite this it was a massive hit and was only one of a handful of non-English language songs to reach number one in the UK.

Happy listening

PS. Just received a silk scarf from a new site I have discovered. It is gorgeous. I will be photographing it to show you as soon as possible. In the meantime you might like to take a look at Lushscarves as they have a sale on till this Sunday.

Thank you as always for taking the time to read and maybe listen. I do appreciate your time and your comments.

Chicatanyage

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Hi Josephine
You took me back to my teens! I loved Francois Hardy and recently saw photos of her with short hair. I keep old music on my IPod for holidays and love the nostalgia of lying in the sun listening to 60s music - Beach Boys, Burt Bacharach, oh the memories.

  • Congratulations on your new grandchild, how exciting! Enjoy your time with your family. I've been doing a lot of driving lately and have the car radio playing music from the 70s. Funny how it suddenly transports me back in time to those high school and college days. It's actually been rather fun feeling so nostalgic.
