Bright coloured capes liven up winter

This season I have decided to add bright colours to my core wardrobe of dark neutrals. I have spent the last few years building up a collection of practical styles in various shades of grey, navy and black. My colouring is cool. If your colouring is warm your basic neutrals may well be the browns, oranges and mustards. I have now arrived at the point where I am yearning for colour to liven up my classics.

My latest addition is this glorious bright fuschia boiled wool cape from HopefashionUK (They do ship internationally). I am wearing it over one of their foundation tops and a pair of classic wide leg trousers.

We took these photographs on a Saturday afternoon at Ham Common. You can just see the cricket team in the background. Very English. However, in this case, I think it may have been the West Indies team practising for a match the following day.

I find capes really useful to pop over a top or sweater when it is chilly but still not cold enough for a winter coat. It is also useful for evenings to sling over your shoulders or to act as an extra layer.

In the three images above I have swapped my wide leg trousers for a pair of Hope’s foundation leggings. I decided to go a bit over the top and wear two necklaces. The chunky one is by Jaeger. Similar available at Etsy and Mango . The feather one is from St.Tropez market Similar from Etsy.

PS. I’m giving away a fabulous WoolOvers knit from their New arrivals collection. If you haven’t yet entered to win, it’s easy. Just go HERE and follow the simple steps. Be sure you’ve used the widget at the bottom of the post to enter. Closes 2.00pm (GMT) October 25th.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Capes are perfect for my part of the world: winters are chilly but often not cold enough for a coat. Love this color ....and it is fabulous on you!

  • Lovely look on you Josephine ! We all need a bit of color. Looking great my dear friend. I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next. Have a great weekend.

  • What a beautiful colour on you. I totally agree we all need a bit of colour, personally very tired of clothes shopping and seeing a sea of black.

  • Like you, I'm working on adding colour to my very neutral wardrobe. I look forward to seeing some more of your choices in future posts!

  • It's cape season, indeed. I wore one today -- on the blusteriest, coolest day of the season so far. Really felt good!
