Building a comfortable practical wardrobe

There is no denying that life is very different from the way it was last Autumn. As we begin to think about the clothes we will be wearing in the months to come the likelihood is that the first word that comes to mind will be comfortable. Whether we are working from home or going for a walk in the park our clothes will need to be hardworking. So let’s begin to build a practical and comfortable wardrobe.

Loungewear, athleisure or whatever you like to call it is being promoted by many of the stores. Brands and designers are no longer trying to persuade us to wear the “latest fashion”. Personal style, practicality and comfort are the new buzz words. Not that I ever took much notice as I have always preferred a more pared-down classic way of dressing.

When I examine my wardrobe I find many items I was wearing in “lockdown” will continue to be part of my wardrobe going forward into Autumn. I was nervous about embracing joggers at the beginning as they reminded me of the gym and running, neither of which I ever liked. To dip my toes in this particular pond I bought my first pair of joggers from Me&Em back in May. You can see me wearing them here. I really got to like them, they were so practical and comfortable and as they were made with drapey fabric they did not bag or cling. Me&Em have an excellent range of joggers plus some great ideas on how to style them.

My grey hoodie is also from Me&Em a few seasons ago. They do some gorgeous cashmere ones, which are on my wish list but they are a bit pricey. These are the second pair of joggers I have bought and they are from Hush.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Some good ideas to revamp & some excuses to buy something new to jazz up the old in a comfortable classic style

  • Thanks for the latest blog. Its been an "interesting" time over the last six months or so. Many of the clothes I would normally have worn to meetings, events, dinners, restaurants are sitting in the cupboard unworn. Hopefully if and when life resumes some kind or normality, they will come into use again.

I'm still cautious of joggers, preferring chinos, but the hoodie and Tshirt combo is now becoming part of my wardrobe as we head into autumn and winter. So very comfortable!

  • You look relaxed and happy. Love your relaxed hair style too. Very youthful. Cheers girl, keep on goin-on!

  • I think you've hit the nail on the head and most of us are going to be looking for comfort more than anything through the winter, especially in view of the stresses and strains of the last few months. I used to be wary of joggers too but I think if you choose the right pair, and the right shoes to go with them, they can look great.

  • Thank you for all your comments. We all seem to be on the same page with the desire for comfortable practical clothes. I am sure that as life continues to be challenging that this trend will continue.

  • Lands" End Sport Knit line fits the bill for me! They have expanded their line this year for obvious reasons!
