Capsule wardrobe for South of France

Capsule wardrobe for South of France

I am getting ready to go to the South of France next week. Apparently, the weather has been a bit changeable recently according to my friends there. Also a reader informed me that there has been sporadic rain and high winds. So I am keeping my wardrobe simple. Keeping to a colour scheme means that all the pieces are interchangeable. I have not included a raincoat and umbrella as I keep those in France.

These are just ideas; you will need to adopt the principles to accommodate your current wardrobe depending on what countries you will be visiting and what you might be doing. The items I have chosen could be adapted to city or beach breaks with the addition of maybe swimsuits and kaftans and of course a packable mac just in case.

Details of above:

Blue linen dress MarksandSpencer / Parrot scarf / longline navy cardigan JohnLewis&partners / White broderie Anglais top MarksandSpencer / Straw bag / bead necklace / White foundation trousers Hopefashion / navy foundation cut off trousers Hopefashion / Silver sandals MarksandSpencer / white trainers fitflops

More suggestions incorporating some warmer colour tones. I have tried the black sarong black skirt and it goes well over a swimsuit for the beach but can also be dressed up with a simple top and some jewellery for the evening. I can vouch that the Fitflop sandals are very comfortable and would be ideal for sight seeing trips.

Our Chicatanyage pop-up scarf shop will be popping down for a few weeks while we go to the South of France for a holiday and in search of new and exciting scarves. Last orders 10 pm (BST) Sunday 2nd June. We will re-open again on 1st July.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I am off to Port Grimaud on Monday for the month. Where are you based? Didn't like your comment about rain ...!

p.s the thing that stumps me every time is shorts! I have one pair of tailored ones, but so many have short waists. I am not a dress lover and it is usually too hot for long trousers ... my favourite shop is The Earth Collection on the harbour front in St Tropez - they are brilliant at sticking to 2 or 3 colours and co-ordinating everything. Some years it's just not my colour choices but if it is, the credit card gets a bashing!

    • Hi Anthea
We will be in Grimaud Village certainly not far from Port Grimaud. I know The Earth Collection soap in St.Tropez well. I am not a great lover of shorts, I just don't have legs for them. I do have an old white pair which I sometimes wear on the beach. I prefer a loose cotton or linen maxi dress or wide linen trousers.

  • I travel a fair amount and maybe I'm just messy but white pants are an absolute "no no" for me. I always opt for jeans - usually one pair in black or a dark wash to wear on the plane and another one or two pairs of pants in the carry on.

    • Hi Peggy
I don't normally wear my white jeans to travel in they are in the bag. I normally wear fairly old clothes to travel in after a tricky situation many years ago when I was flying to Europe with my co-trainer (we ran corporate seminars back then). His neighbour spilt red wine on the beige trousers that he was planning to wear for his presentations!

Although I think I will on this trip as it is only a short haul and I won't be eating or drinking except water.

  • Just returned from Rayol-Canada’s-sur-Mur,south of St Tropez. The weather was glorious, one afternoon of showers.Linen shift dress, fit flops, coloured scarf or beads, the perfect attire.
