Clothing that protects your skin from the sun

Over the last couple of years I have become extremely paranoid about protecting my skin from the harmful rays of the sun. I wish I had known years ago about how much damage the sun’s rays can do to the skin. Especially the UVA ones which do long term harm that may not become apparent for decades. However most women of my generation were ignorant of these facts and we used to lie out in the midday sun sometimes smothered in olive oil. There were very few sun protection products on the market back then and you were considered something of a “wuss” if you used so much as a factor 15.

Now we all know better and there are more and more products on the market to help us to keep our skin safe and young looking. I smother a factor 50 mineral sun protection cream on my face every morning and touch up during the day with a mineral powder (especially on my nose).

The highest protection is to be fully covered at all times. This however is not that practical on the beach if you want to look “chic and fashionable”. HydroChic to the rescue with their ultra practical and elegant UV range. Clothes that you can wear for jogging, swimming, yoga or all three if you are that energetic. They kindly sent me an outfit to take with me to France to try out and photograph on the most popular beach in St. Tropez “Pampelonne”. We got up early in order to have peace and quiet and avoid the crowds. Here are the results.

I have never done yoga on a beach before and it was a wonderful experience. I wonder if I have the discipline to get up early enough to do this more often.

Just had to have a photo outside Club 55

WARNING DO NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO IF YOU ARE SQUEAMISH – However I wish I had seen it a couple of years ago. If I had I would have had more information and made more of a fuss when my GP told me on three consecutive occasions that the spot on the tip of my nose was harmless. It wasn’t! I was lucky to still catch it in time and following a procedure and some amazing plastic surgery I am now fine.

This is not a sponsored post although I was sent a complimentary outfit to try and which I will keep down here in the South of France as I found it great for walking on the beach and feeling completely protected from the strong sun.

Thank you for reading. I really love to hear from you and appreciate the time you take to leave comments.

Chicatanyage

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Wonderful yoga form. I have been practicing for 12 years and actually have no idea what I look like when doing an asana.

Your link to the protective clothing website will be very helpful to me. I go to Cape Cod each summer and, although covered in sunblock, I worry about exposure. My 33 year old son was diagnosed with melanoma 4 years ago and we pray all the time that it stays in remission. We are all very fair skinned and burn easily. When I think of the days I spent "tanning" as a young woman, knowing full well that I do not tan, I cannot believe the silliness. I do everything to protect myself now.

  • Thanks for the information about the sun-protective clothing. Being fair-skinned and already having had one experience with skin cancer (fortunately caught quite early), I am quite aware of the need for sun protection. Although I rarely get by the water, these clothes would be great for gardening and running. Will definitely pass the word along to both my daughter and my mother as well.

  • Yoga on the beach sounds like such a wonderful experience; I wish I lived closer to the beach!
