Super bright shades are continuing to be on trend for the foreseeable future. The A/W 17 collections showed strong colours and interesting combinations. Now might be the time to become more confident with colour.

Bright colours can be a little daunting. It is all to easy to stick to the usual colour combinations. Perhaps you normally pair your brights with your tried and trusted neutrals. Thinking out of the box and mixing up the palette might just create some fresh outfits.

I have been experimenting. For my first bright colour combination I have chosen to combine a delicate pink coat with a vibrant cool toned red sweater.

Above:

Pink coat Mango  (US link) // Red merino sweater Me&Em  (reduced from £75 to £52)
Wide black trousers Me&Em  //Pointy slingback shoes Marks&Spencer (UK) (USA)
Pink pendant last year from Anthropologie (this years version)  // Teardrop Earrings Monica Vinader (US)

The cherry blossom was so delicate and beautiful when we took these photos. Ethereal and timeless yet it only lasts for a moment.

If you aim to wear more colour Spring 2017 offers some unusual pairings. Orange and bright blue, pink and purple, blue and scarlet, sunshine yellows and zesty orange, pinks and reds. These are often colours that traditionally we are told should be kept well apart. Not this year.

I am loving this cherry blossom pink and rouge combination.

Are you bold or timid with colour? How do you wear your bright colours or do you prefer to avoid them?

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Wow. I love the pink coat with the red top, Josephine. And the coat with the full pants is such a fresh look. I'm trying to embrace "big" this season. Or at least move away from my narrow cropped pants and long narrow tops...which is my go-to outfit way too much.

  • Great colour combination! I'm particularly keen on magenta, lime green, turquoise, citric yellow and red, actually now that I think about it, any vibrant cool colour usually with a navy foundation. Seeing this post has reminded me to try and break out of my habitual combinations.

  • It's already warm weather season here, so I"m wearing white pants almost every day. Love my citrine long top with them...or the red Eileen Fisher top, or for evening a long navy all cotton dress shirt. I do love color...and try to have something fun or sparkly always!

  • I LOVE pink and red together! It's one of my favorite color combos, and looks smashing on you. That pink coat is such a winner.

  • I would never have thought of wearing red and pink together. But it does look great. I've never worn pink though, not even as a little girl
