Coloured Cardigans

I consider the humble cardigan to be an essential summer favourite especially if you live in the UK with its volatile climate.  It can be chilly when you start out in the morning and then turn into anything from a hot sunny day to grey overcast skies with a crisp wind.

The cardigan can act as a scarf, be rolled up and carried in a holdall for emergencies or simple be wrapped round your shoulders like a shawl.

Do you consider that the humble cardigan has updated and lost its old-fashioned frumpy image?

All comments greatly appreciated.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Pretty in pink...that's how you look. I think you made some great selections to star in this post...great colors.

  • I'm new to your web site and so glad I found it. I have a small collection of cardigans and after looking at these I think I need to add some more. The pink really suits your colouring.

  • Thank you for all the cardies! I think you are absolutely right in the wonderful usefulness of these garments, but for years I avoided them as they made me look too matronly. This year though I was tempted by 2 plain, button-though crew necks in cotton in the Landsend sale. One is hot pink which I wear with a plain white tee shirt, and the other is deep sea blue which looks great with a print blouse. I'm not sure why they look spot on this year. Maybe the bright colours or the shorter length, but I am hooked, and might well investigate your suggestions!

  • I love cardies.......This past weekend my youngest daughter "ran off" with two of mine! Previously she thought they were too mature!!

  • I have recently bought two lightweight cascade cardigans, that I am enjoying wearing on cooler days here in Spain. I have to say that for many years I didn't buy cardigans for the same reasons as Joan - but now there are so many in more flattering colours and/or designs that I have been adding to my collection. You have a great collection here, by the way!

  • Hi MJ Have not heard the word "card" for many years. It really reminds me of my mother.

  • The best two cardigans I have are 3/4 length sleeve, v necked, and wide ribbed around the bottom.
They are in bright colours and are made by Lakeland.
I have others but feel frumpy wearing them.

  • Hi - I am not usually a lover of cardigans but I love your choices and you look super in the bubble-gum pink one. Hmm great idea to go out on a private photo-shoot with a friend sounds like lots of fun. The last, very hot, summer I was able to wear sleevless and strappy dresses but always had a cardigan tucked into my bag. I found a novel way of wearing it too and that was to tie the bottom ends underneath the bust line "a la Audrey Hepburn" which looked super stylish for the cooler part of the day. I can't wait for summer again, maybe it will arrive in a few weeks time.

  • After looking and reading I might be tempted to give cardigans a chance again. I have some that have been tucked away for a while. Too good to jettison but not often worn. Might pack a couple for my week in the Cotswolds. I have a nice black one with pearly buttons which may go with my white linen trousers. Hmmm must try that combination!!

    • Hi Marilyn I find that black and white is nearly always a winner and the Cotswolds can be chilly in the evening at this time of year.

  • I love your post. I'm also new to your website and am enjoying it tremendously. I am obsessed with cardi's and have been for a while. As you said in your post, you can wear them so many different ways. I have them in tons of colors and love to layer with them, drape them around my shoulders and wear them so many different ways. I actually consider them an accessory in my wardrobe, right along with all my silk scarves. It's so easy to add that "pop" of color to any outfit. I especially love the one I have that have silk in them. They are not bulky in the least bit and hold their shape. I prefer closer fitting ones that aren't too long. Thanks again for your post and ideas on how to wear them.

    • Welcome to my blog Rozon and for your lovely comment. I hope to hear more from you in the future.
