Cosy knits to keep us warm

At this time of year, I suffer from a lack of light. Here in London, the skies have been very grey over the last few weeks. It is also still cold and damp and I seem to want to hibernate. If we live in the northern hemisphere I feel we need cosy knits to keep us warm.

In this post, I have chosen bright colours as I feel this also helps to lift our spirits. These brighter colours will transition well into Spring. I have also experimented with unusual combinations such as apricot and bright blue. You may well have some of these colours in your wardrobe and might not have thought to combine them together. One of the easier trends for the coming season is mixing up colours in unusual ways, such as green and orange, pink and purple. I have always like to maximise my wardrobe by doing this as you can see here.

What tricks do you use to deal with the “winter blues?” I use a Lumie body clock light to wake me up in the morning. This allows me to wake up slowly and to get some daylight even if there is none outside my window. I also try to get out for a walk which allows me to keep my circadian rhythm in check.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Josephine,
Interesting to see the orange and the black drawstring bags! I have a red coach drawstring bag that must be 25+ years old. I discovered it hidden away, have revived it, and receive loads of "love your bag!" comments. I'm happy to be using it again. Lots of beautiful sweater choices today. Thanks.

  • Do so agree about colourful knits for our grey days. Have added jade, ,red, apricot to my wardrobe.I love the cobalt blue woollen scarf but sadly it would swamp my 5foot frame. Have bought a red Coach shoulder bag and a turquoise Radley tote. Latter is beautiful though not a sensible colour, perhaps!! Ah well, at my age, feel like living dangerously!

  • I was looking for a way to jazz-up my outfits without buying many new things. I didn't think of achieving this with unusual colour-combinations. Great idea! Will have a look through my wardrobe and see how I can achieve this. Thank you.

  • Living on the Canadian prairie, I used to dread January because it seemed like an endless and depressing month of dreary grey days. I started taking Vitamin D a few years ago and it made a huge difference. If you haven't tried it, I would definitely suggest it. My doctor recommended 1000 IU/day.

  • I agree Vitamin D is very important. I had a blood test recently and discovered that I was very dificient so I now take drops every day.
