How I Experimented with yellow

Yellow is not a colour that features in my wardrobe. I have never thought that it worked well with my skin tone. However, as there are so many varieties of yellow currently in the shops this season I thought I would give it a go.

I chose this abstract print top from MarksandSpencer. (US link). I felt that as the yellow was diluted with the soft white it would be easier to wear. I think I was right. I will definitely not be abandoning my favourite pinks, lilacs and blues. However yellow does make a refreshing change.

To tone the top down I have teamed it with a pair of white jeans (several years old) and my H&M yellow clutch.

I also tried it as part of a more dressy look. I am wearing it here with a pair of Armani Collezioni trousers. They are many years old yet still fit perfectly and look current as the trend has swung back to wider style trousers (similar). If you are an Armani fan I found this site which has a selection of Armani Collezioni at very reduced prices. Sizes are a bit random but there are some lovely jackets that would be ideal as part of a wedding outfit.

My cream jacket is also a few years old. How I wore it in 2016 and again in 2017. Nude pumps complete the look.

Do you try colours that are outside your comfort zone?

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Not sure about the Armani trouser colour and prefer the yellow and white combination. I find that a strong yellow works with a strong blue for example a yellow clutch with a royal blue dress.

    • Hi Barbara
I agree I think that I marginally prefer the top with the white trousers.

  • I love yellow with soft colours as well as with navy, Looks lovely, here. :)

  • J'aime vraiment la combinaison de couleurs pour ces deux tenues : l'idée de la couleur taupe, pour la deuxième, atténue la couleur jaune sans la diminuer.
Et est très tendance, ainsi qu'élégante.
    Bravo, Josephine !

  • This top looks lovely on you, Josephine. I think the clear yellow with white is the perfect pop without being too much; it creates just enough visual interest. I personally love it with the tan trousers and white jacket. It would also look good with white or navy trousers. I love your blog! Your looks are very inspiring. I have put together a number of new looks from my closet using your tips, and I've been able to identify some missing items that I've sought out for my wardrobe based on your posts. I also started using Look Fabulous Forever cosmetics thanks to you! It is a great product line. I did not think I could wear red lipstick until I found their Cherry Red lipstick.

  • I agree with your comment on the red lipstick Pat the LFF cherry is the only one I can wear. It is nice and soft.

  • Yellow used to look great on me as a blonde but, since my hair has gone white the color does me no favors. I still prefer my blues and mauve, I also prefer them on you as well. Having said that, I think you are brave to try yellow and hope you enjoy wearing it as a change.

  • There is a yellow for everyone, you just have to find the right one, for those of us with the skin tone of the average vampire the very acid yellows (that are well on the way to lime) work well. Wearing yellow always cheers me!

  • I agree about the shades of yellow being the key for being flattering or not. My hair used to be a mix of soft brown with blond streaks. Now it's a mix of blond and white. My eyes are dark blue. One of my favorite dresses was a shade of yellow best described as "soft banana." When I see this shade I'll know it. It may not be the shade for me anymore, but it's fun to look for it.

  • I don't have any yellows in my closet either. Although I'm not quite sure why. I do respect MaureenC's comment that there's a yellow for everyone. I suppose I just need to find my yellow.

BTW, I think you look lovely in this shade of yellow. It's certainly a great summer look with those white slacks.
