Hairstyle refresh and recommended products

For several weeks I have been meaning to write a post on my new hairstyle refresh and recommended products I like and currently use. I have finally got round to doing some research on hair care products suitable for our often wayward ageing hair, so here is the post.

I am lucky that I have found a great hairdresser who really understands my hair and how I like it styled. Sandra at JeanLouisDavid in St.Tropez.

As we get older our hair changes. I am lucky in that I started off with thick wavy hair so even though it has got thinner there is still enough of it to support a short hairstyle. The products I have found that helps to add volume is Living proof thickening mousse. In fact, I find their products very effective. Philip Kingsley is good range especially their Elastisizer, a product you use before you wash your hair. It adds shine and protects the hair form UV rays, excellent on holiday.

A really interesting brand I have just discovered at MarksandSpencer is WOW. They have some great products especially the one-minute transformer if you can’t be bothered or don’t have time to wash your hair. You could try their mini hair care kit. If you are planning to travel there is a free gift of summer essentials haircare kit if you spend £30 on any of their other products. Cabin approved sizes if you are travelling with just a carry on.

Final styling tricks:

I start by blow drying my hair upside down I find that this helps to add volume to the roots. When I have finished drying I use Wella rugged texture. I rub it between my hands to soften it a little and the deal with any stray flyaway hairs. I like it because you can actually move the style around because it does not make the hair stiff. Finally, a spritz of L’Oreal tecniArt natural finish and I am ready to go.

With regards to colour mine seems to have gone a very strange mixture of grey at the front, dark at the back with patches that tend to go too yellowy for my liking. I stick to my tried and trusted L’Oreal silver shampoo and my Osmo silverising conditioner. I also usually have a silver rinse when I go to the hairdressers. However this time it did not work very well and some parts of my hair still looked a bit brassy so when I returned to London I found this amazing product Icy blonde gloss by Josh Wood. It really toned down the yellow and got me back to my silvery blonde which is where I like to be.

Last years version of my hair-cut here.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Really like this look, Josephine. The upswept style is smart casual and would go anywhere. Think it is immensely flattering and very chic. If I was going short, I would love this style. Hope you like it too!

  • I recently also started using purple shampoo and conditioner for my salon coloured brunette hair to keep the colour cool toned as it fades (and yellows) with our strong UV in New Zealand. My hairdresser uses a technique called multi dimensional highlighting to keep it looking natural and recommended the products.

  • I love your new hair cut. Very flattering. I would like to try John Wood's shots but alas, they don't ship to Australia.

  • U have recently gone to my natural color...very similar to yours. I seemed to always be fighting the yellow until I learned that white hair turns yellow when exposed to sunlight. A hat has helped tremendously as well as continuing with my blue shampoo. Hope this helps!

    • You are absolutely right about the sun and yellow hair. I nearly always wear a hat.
