How I wear my cosy pea coat

Winter has definitely arrived here in the UK and the chill wind doth blow. It is time to wrap up in thick sweaters and warm coats. The grey coat I am wearing in the photo is by Gerard Darel. I bought it last year in a small boutique in our village in France. J.Crew have a similar one this season. The jacket is modelled on the classic pea coat/reefer jacket. A style that I consider a very useful workhorse. “Reefers” were originally designed for sailors.  They are usually made of wool and are therefore substantial enough to keep the coldest of winds at bay.

I have teamed mine with a pair of wide velvet trousers from MandS(USA link). They are a new purchase this season. I love the soft drape of velvet (very forgiving on the curves). I intend to wear these during the day and to dress them up for evening by substituting the cream polo neck for a silk shirt and some statement jewellery.

It is a little difficult to see the detail of the velvet trousers in the photo. They are a soft deep navy with a short pile and subtle shimmer.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Hope you are feeling better.

I love the polo necks, a favourite of mine. I liked your leather biker jacket. One problem for me and maybe for others is how each season to know what to throw out and what will blend with new purchases. As you get older it is so easy to have favourite pieces and to get a little stuck in an era, while not knowing how to update one's style. Your blog is excellent for inspiration, by the way. A little help with what to keep (and therefore, what to let go) would be most helpful. Thanks.

    • Hi Kathryn
A good question. I will add the subject to my draft posts to remind me. Maybe January would be a good time to address this issue.

  • Aah, Gerard Darel, can't go wrong, love the brand. Very much admire your fedora, but unfortunately a hat leaves me with terrible 'hat hair'! So can't remove my hat until I get home. Any suggestions apart from a thicker head of hair ?

    • Hi Viv
Luckily I have quite thick hair. I use a very good Shu Uemura texturising foam before I dry my hair. This seems to give it extra bounce and fullness.

  • I am moved to finally post my first comment, after a year of lurking: I *love* the jacket, and the overall look. Inspiring.
