How I work the oversize look

How I work the oversize look. What do you think of the oversize trend? Definitely for the tall and well built amongst us. Also a bit 80s with the large shoulders. According to the current autumn 2017 runway shows we will seeing much more of this silhouette for autumn. Maybe we need to get our eye accustomed to the changing “look” after so many seasons of skinny jeans and leggings.

I thought I would experiment with the new silhouette. This oversize mac is from Topshop. They offer a good range of similar styles . Teamed with my NYDJ jeans at JDWilliams and Nordstrom. Plus my Stan Smiths for a relaxed look.

The image below is from one of my favourite french magazines. As you can see the oversize coat is already a current trend. I don’t think we have to go this far with the shoulders. However I do like the interesting detail such as epaulettes and zips.

Yellow is not my best colour and I would definitely not wear it near my face. However I think that the bright yellow zip is fun. Mirrored with yellow on the cuffs they add on trend details.

My new watch was a Christmas present from Mr.P. I absolutely love it. It is by Coach. I could not find the exact model but these are similar beige strap / black strap / pink strap /blue strap

One of my favourite brands MeandEm have added some new stock with 30% discount in their mid-season sale.

I had such fun taking these photos with fellow blogger Julie of Jafinthebox. The photos were taken in my local village in South West London. Follow her on Instagram.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I've still got too many photos of my younger, slimmer self in voluminous macs in the 1980s reminding me to treat this look with caution! Even more so as I'm no longer wearing 3" heels so I can only rely on my unelevated 5'5" for height. I shall look forward to seeing how you style this as the seasons progress Josephine.

    • I think you are right Maureen this might be a challenge. I had to get a size down otherwise it would have swamped me. I think if I tried to team it with heels it would look 80s! The footwear is important it needs something very current.

  • I don't think I am at any time going for that oversized look, but one never knows, do we? I am too short with my 160 cm fore those big cloths, and I too still have the 80's i mind. Have a wonderfull weekend.

  • I would be totally swallowed up with this look! It never did anything for me in the past, and now in later years, would be even worse! Do love that yellow zipper though!

    • Thank you Judith. I know that this look is not for everyone. However as I get older I feel like being bolder.

  • I think you look fabulous. Don't know if I could ever do the shoulder pad. I am short they make me look funny. Love the shoes.

  • I like the photos you picked up for this post Josephine. I don't know how you do it but you always manage to make any combination look effortless! I absolutely love your watch! Have a good weekend! Julie x

  • You look fabulous. However, I am 5'3" and no longer have a waist, so this
    look is not for me.

  • I just love those yellow details on your trench! I can't belt either, so I'll probably continue to try and balance oversized pieces with narrower ones.

  • Like the detail of color but not yellow. Very few people can wear yellow. Sorry but I think you look swallowed up in the coat. This is not trend I will embrace. Been there done that with shoulder pads. NOPE , not again.

  • Love this look on you. I need a trench and will take a look at this coat. What a nice gift the watch was! Is it Rose gold? It's beautiful.

    • Hi Brenda

Yes the watch is Rose Gold. The trench is very generous I would recommend going down a size.
