How to adapt a summer skirt for winter

I have loved wearing my maxi skirts and dresses during the summer season and I don’t want to stop wearing them. So how to adapt a summer maxi skirt for the colder winter months. In a previous post I recommended wearing a pair of leggings under the skirt. This trick seems to have worked very well and has kept my legs warm. If you like wearing thick tights these would work just as well. I have swapped my sandals for a pair of flat trainers. You could equally well team the skirt with a pair of trendy chunky boots. Finally a warm cosy polo neck sweater completes the look. Blue & white print skirt still available but only size 10 left. Navy polo sweater from HopeFashionuk.

uniqlo have some excellent cashmere roll neck sweaters (US link).

Selection of roll neck sweaters:

Navy roll-neck sweater from Hopefashionuk. The necklace I am wearing below is from the Chicatanyage shop. My shoes are from Fitflop.

The scarf that I am wearing is 100% cashmere is available at the Chicatanyage shop. (very low in stock)

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Another charming “Josephine” outfit in shades of my favorite color. You always look so pretty and youthful, my goal for my own outfits!

  • You look lovely in this outfit. Really well put together, all components compliment each other.

  • In my climate, bare legs in winter invite frostbite. No one should have exposed skin at -40C. And yet, women do it. I wear tights and skip dresses altogether when temperatures plummet. Women in my own family scorn tights in favor of goosebumps and bare blue legs. Leggings under a maxi dress are the perfect solution for those who insist on showing skin all year round. Toes get frostbite, too, but to each their own. I'd wear this with socks and knee-high boots.

    • Thank you for your comment. It was quite a warm day when we took these photos. If it was cold I would wear my boots and socks

  • So much of our year is extremely hot here in Arizona, USA. Being able to wear our summer clothing during the winter is handy. We do get cold enough weather during the winter that we need warm long-sleeve shirts, cardigans, sweaters, leather jackets, jean jackets, quilted jackets, warm wraps and coats. Layers are very important in our weather!! I do just what you do and wear leggings underneath my summer skirts. When it is finally too cold for this to be warm I pull out my corduroy skirts, dark blue jean skirts and my dressier heavier weight skirts and wear them with opaque tights and booties or my tall boots!! Getting older, heavier than we were when young and physical not well is no excuse for us not to dress well!! Plus, do our hair and make-up!! Use a bit of perfume!! Go out and bless the people around you today!!

    • Absolutely! I live with the memory of my Aunt Mary’s Lipstick Rule for ladies of all ages: WEAR IT! We were reminded if it was absent. She was so right. Nothing brightens up a woman’s face like a flattering shade of lipstick.

  • I'm curious as to what "leg covering" you would wear with slacks and vionic pointed-toe ballet flats. As mentioned, everyone goes bare-legged but my feet can get cold! I've found some "footies" to wear with the flats but am not happy when you see the bare legs when crossing your ankles, etc. Wearing sneakers or a heavier shoe presents no problem since I'll wear socks. Any suggestions? Once again, lovely outfit especially the color! Oh how I loved wearing the "knee high" hose! I know, I'm old!

    • Hello Margie
I would probably choose to wear opaque pop socks of about 40 or 60 denier . You can still buy ones that go as high as the knee at Marks and Spencer (they do have a US site).

  • Hello Josephine
I have for a long time toyed with buying this maxi skirt…..at long last I have & it’s great! You do give me inspiration to come out of my comfort zone & I can see me wearing it on Boxing Day with a light merino wool jumper.
I also thank you for a blog awhile ago where you introduced us to Look fabulous forever makeup….I tried it & loved it.
Looking forward to reading your next blogs.

    • Hello Tricia
I am really glad that you decided to buy the skirt. I am sure that you will love wearing it.
