How to combine navy and white for a classic look

How to combine navy and white for a classic look

I have not yet unpacked my Autumn clothes. On a day to day basis, I am relying on a combination of navy and white for a classic look. I am continuing to research the new Autumn colours and am slowly adding key pieces to my wardrobe; which I will be revealing soon.

In the meantime, a classic white shirt combined with my navy paper bag trousers is proving to be the ideal solution.

These wide-leg navy trousers are the same style as the print ones I wore with my navy blazer in a previous post. The lightweight fabric is ideal for this time of year and they are extremely comfortable.

I am not sure why this style of trousers is referred to as “paper bag” I suppose because they have a gathered waist and have a self-tie belt. I often wear them without the belt and they look just as good. They are an ideal shape for me as I have a small waist and wider hips. I often find that if trousers fit my hips they are too big on the waist.

I know this look will not work for everybody, if you are petite you may well need a slimmer leg or you could try the cropped version.

On trend in Paris

It used to be thought that elastic waist trousers were “frumpy”. This is definitely no longer true; when I was in Paris in June many of the chic French women were wearing this style of trouser.

The trousers I am wearing are from People Tree. They are no longer available. however as this style is very on trend this season, I had no problem in finding a wide selection of similar trousers.

Chicatanyage

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Back in the 1950's, my mother saw navy as the staple color of her wardrobe in all four seasons, changing only the fabric and, of course, the style, as back then, styles could change quite radically from not only year to year, but also season to season. As a result, I grew up to see navy as my own staple color, although I do wear more black than my mother ever wore. For me, navy is the one color that looks best with my pale skin and hair, and blends well with so many other colors. It is dark enough to wear to more serious functions, yet can be easily brightened up with a piece of statement jewelry, a bright handbag and shoes, and / or a lovely patterned scarf. And, of course, it looks wonderful with white. Over the years, navy has faded in and out of fashion; I notice that it's not as easy these days to buy navy shoes and bags, but that will change again. Thank you. You looked lovely in those pants.

    • Hi Tina
Thank you for your comment. I agree that navy is more flattering as we get older I still wear some black but always as you suggest with a bright scarf or jewellery. I do have some navy shoes and a handbag (a few years old) I had not noticed that there was not as much choice I will bear it in mind during my research.

  • I love navy and white it’s my favourite combination but I am only 5ft.4 inches size 8-10 so always wear skinny or straight trousers. and love reading your blogs.

    • Hi Susan
I am glad you like my blog. I agree that skinny or straight trousers will work best for you.
