How to keep warm in a luxury coat

Do you find that some pieces in your wardrobe become permanent fixtures? They are like old friends. They have faithfully travelled through the years with you. My sheepskin coat definitely comes into this category. I bought it in the mid-90s when I was working as an image consultant and coach in the corporate market. It was a luxury purchase that I have never regretted. Every year when temperatures are below zero I dig it out of storage and it envelops me in snuggly warmth. See how I wore it last year. It also formed part of the capsule wardrobe I took to Paris last December.

As well as being practical this coat exudes glamour and has kept me cosy and warm on many winter nights slung over a flimsy party outfit. Who wants to arrive at a party with goosebumps.

I have given my sturdy coat a touch of glitz with my pearl beret, shimmery necklace and jewel-encrusted gloves.

My black trousers are a few years old (similar available at HopeFashion). Underneath my coat, I am wearing my thermal lace sleeved top from MarksandSpencer. It is so glamorous that it easily doubles as an evening top.

This Thursday we will be driving down to France. I shall be wrapped up in my Shearling coat as it is predicted to be very cold even in the South of France.

Photographs were taken in Richmond Park on a very cold morning by Laura Hines. Follow her Instagram.

For last minute shoppers, there is still time for that last minute gift. Check out my Christmas gift ideas Including stocking fillers under £20 and £10.

Chicatanyage

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I have a shearling coat today, one I bought years ago in a great sale during a heat wave in the summer! I nearly passed out trying it on in the store but I never regretted the purchase! Like you, I dig it out during the worst cold weeks of winter and snuggle in. One tip I'd like to offer you is to look into a pair of SmartWool socks - very thin, some patterns perfect for dress shoes or booties and incredibly warm and cozy!

    • Thanks for the tip about the socks. They look very warm and ideal to wear with walking boots or shoes

  • I have a similar black, thigh-length coat that is perfect for cold, winter funerals as well as more pleasurable occasions. I didn't realise so many are still available.
Have a good trip to the SoF. I'm not going until the new year. My tip is to have a throw for over your knees on the journey. My husband likes it cool in the car - too cool for me!
Have a wonderful time - say hello to St Tropez from me!

    • Hi Jane

I definitely take a throw to wrap around me in the car and a pillow for my head. I love St.Tropez at this time of year. I returns to its original village vibe.

  • I just tried to leave a comment and it said my WP login had expired???? Anyway, yes, I had a lovely shearling coat when we lived in Manhattan. Absolutely critical for those cold, windy waits for the bus to come!!! Now of course our winters are warmer here and light jacket or cashmere poncho will do on most days!

  • The problem is keeping the coat closed in blustery winds in north Texas. I look for coats with buttons. I do love that lovely shade of gray and your knitted hat.

  • Beautiful. Wish it got cold enough where I live to wear it. We are just hoping for a cool Christmas day in australia. Merry Christmas

  • Hi, just discovered your website and love it! Loved the pearl gloves as an accessory, tried to buy them on Etsy but were sold out, so I’ve ordered sew on pearls from Amazon and plan to customise a pair I already have. Will start to ‘follow’ this lovely site on Facebook.

    • Hi Catherine
Welcome and glad you like my blog. What a great idea to sew pearls onto your gloves. In fact you could add pearls or sequins to other items like hats etc.
