New seasons colour palette

How to prepare our wardrobes to transition into Autumn

As I look out of my window I can see the leaves of my wisteria begin to turn a light golden brown. The first leaves of autumn beginning to fall to the ground. I thought that I would take a look towards the coming season and how we might begin to prepare our wardrobes as we transition into autumn. After months of wearing vibrant prints let us begin to contemplate a more neutral palette. Not that the bright vibrant colours will be going away any time soon. There are plenty of bright blues, pinks, yellows, greens and oranges to keep us happy. Plus some interesting colour combinations that I will be exploring in later posts.

For today’s post, I thought that I would research some basic neutrals. The simplest way to transition into autumn is to check out the classic staples that you already have in your wardrobe. The following are what I consider useful items to start with. For example a basic trench or similar, a classic jacket/blazer, jeans, well-fitting trousers, a selection of sweaters/cardigans and well-fitting boots.

I have added some brighter tones for sweaters, blouses and accessories to lift the basic neutrals in the two collages.

Rust cord jacket Boden | Double-breasted trench coat Marks&Spencer | Print shirt Boden | Camel trousers Marks&Spencer | Green earrings JCrew | Tan boots Boden | Cashmere sweater JCrew.

Details of above:

Pink blazer Boden | Double-breasted navy trench coat Cos | Print blouse Boden | Navy trousers Jaeger at MarksandSpencer | Black ankle boots MarksandSpencer | Rose gold-toned drop earrings MarksandSpencer | Lilac V neck sweater Uniqlo (US link) neutral colours only).

I found an excellent reasonably priced trench coat at Uniqlo.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Josephine, I was perusing your posts again this morning and was once again struck with the beauty and charms of the Boden blouse in the cool palette (the Miranda). I hit the link and as luck would have it, there was one size left in that lovely multi-floral pattern. As blouse is marked down $30, I took it as a sign. Free shipping too. Can’t wait for it to arrive. If too full, I will take it in myself! Thank you for posting

    • Hello Kathleen
Glad you bought the Boden blouse and hope that you enjoy wearing it.
Also thank you for the compliment regarding my husband on the previous post. I will pass it on. He is quite camera shy.
