How to sparkle during the festive season

This year we may not be going to any parties, however let’s look at how we can sparkle during the festive season. One of the easiest ways to do this is to add sequins to your outfit as I did last year. Sequins can be more adaptable than you might think. A few key pieces will see you through the season.

You might choose a sequin jacket or top and co-ordinate it with a simple pair of jeans, as you can see from my outfit above. Alternatively, you could wear your sequin jacket over a simple dress to create a more casual look. How about a simple outfit and a pair of sparkly shoes. There are many ways to add some sparkle to the festive season.

Sequins definitely add a sparkle to any occasion. If worn close to the face they add light and luminosity to the face.

We are hoping to get down to our flat in Grimaud for the new year but who knows if that will be possible, what with Brexit and the pandemic. If we do I plan to wear my sequin top even if it is just the two of us having dinner together.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I love the sequin top with the red wrap and jeans...and the more dressy version. That is my idea of holiday dressing, especially this year!

  • I love the sequin top with the red wrap too. Where is the wrap from??
I would definitely wear that outfit!!

    • Hello Kim
Glad you like the outfit. The red wrap was from St.Tropez market as was available in our scarf shop. It is sold out and unfortunately as we've not been able to get to France this Autumn we have not been able to buy any more.

  • I like the outfits you have suggested but disappointed to see that they include sequins. Sequins, like glitter, are really bad for the environment so would be nice to see outfits that are more ‘green’.

    • Hello Angela
Thank you for your comment. I was unaware that sequins were not environmentally friendly. As I buy my clothes carefully and keep them for a long time and encourage my readers to do the same I don't think that my sequins will be going to landfill any time soon. I will shortly be modeling a Sequin jacket that belonged to my grandmother. I think from the 1930s.

  • I always enjoy your posts even though I only comment occasionally. I am in Canada and our Government is the process of doing a Trade Deal with the UK. I am hoping that Made in the UK will not have duties imposed. This would make it more cost effective to shop on-line with UK stores. I hope you have a lovely Holiday Season and stay safe. Vaccines start today in Canada starting with Long Term Care homes and staff. Love these pictures.

  • I love these pictures, too! You look adorable, Josephine. We are rejoicing, as Sharon, above, that our first vaccinations in the U.S. also started today. I hope you are able to go to your home in France for the New Year celebration, Josephine and appreciate your continuing your blog this year and adapting it to suit the strange time we have all been going through. Have a lovely holiday, all, and please be careful and safe!

  • No Christmas parties and events to attend this year. For the first time in our 44 years of marriage, hubby and I will be spending Christmas at home alone together, but you've inspired me to take out my green sequinned top and wear it at least once during the season even if it's just for dinner one night.

  • Echoing Francie above, you look smashing Josephine and, along with many others, we fully appreciate you continuing to cheer us up with your beautiful and inspiring blogs, understanding that it is much time, hard work and effort for you to go out and pose in the cold while we sit at our computer or tablet sipping a hot drink and loving the result. Thank you very much. So grateful for women like you. xx

  • I agree with the commenters above . I don’t comment often but I always read your blog & much appreciate your efforts . Especially in these difficult times . Hubby & I will be just us two over Xmas for only the second time in our lives . That’s fine . The amazing scientists are giving us the best Christmas gift ever & we’re happy to wait just a little longer to socialise . Now where did I put my sparkly top ....

  • As always you look fabulous! On the west coast of Canada we are pretty much stuck indoors with Covid. I too am grateful that the vaccine is on its way.

  • Thank you so much for this post. You look lovely and all of the comments from all over the world are so touching. I find myself weeping for the sheer beauty of it all. Thanks for reminding us to celebrate, even if it’s in a small way this year.
