How to transition to Autumn using your summer wardrobe

How to transition to Autumn using your summer wardrobe. Summer has been so long and hot that it is difficult to imagine the temperatures getting lower. Undeterred by the continuing warmth the trees around us are already beginning to turn stunning shades of red and rust. I have certainly got a lot of wear from all my summer dresses, skirts and tee shirts this year. I have worn many of them on rotation. Several of them are beginning to look a bit weary and are ready to be retired. However, there are several that I still love.

I have recently been exploring the new season styles and colours yet it does not seem to be time yet to transition to Autumn. So I am exploring how to get the most wear out of some of my Summer items. With a little thought and planning, It is the perfect opportunity for creative layering it is possible to get extra mileage out of your favourite summer items. Maxi/midi dresses and skirts are ideal pieces to start with as you can easily team them with lightweight knits and light jackets.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I’ve enjoyed wearing my summer clothes in the UK for a change this year! Dresses from Cos have been my favourites. Just ordered the orange cashmere/merino mix cardigan you have featured Josephine, I like quality so keeping my fingers crossed on this one.

  • Lovely pieces. Still daily sun, blue skies and 90s here in NJ. September will bring 80s. Hope we’ll see 70s in October. I look forward to cardigan weather while appreciating this endless summer. Love the look of a soft, flowy dress or skirt with a cardi.

  • I’ve been wearing maxi dresses as they were cooler than trousers and tops. Had nice comments regarding dresses and it was lovely to see women in skirts rather than the ubiquitous trousers. Have jackets and cardigans in “my” colours from the Kettlewell Colours people. Great site for colourful clothes.

  • Thank you, Josephine, so inspiring and I have ordered the orange cardigan and both blouses-- hope they will work!

  • It has definitely been the summer of the dress here, too. There is no sign of fall yet. Daytime temperatures are over 30°C. Tonight's temperature will be 20°C. I'm wearing items similar to what you show in this post.

  • I love the blue and orange cardigans, a great alternative to a jacket. I'm in no rush for the weather to cool down just yet!
