How to wear velvet this season

Ideas on how to wear velvet this season. Velvet is a very versatile fabric. It is usually associated with evenings and parties. This season velvet has come out of the dark and can be worn during the day as well as the night. It is rich and sumptuous and has a sensuous feel and lustrous look.

The ruby red Devore velvet long line jacket I am wearing above is by Mango (last season). I found similar styles at Eileen Fisher, and a navy version at Nordstrom.

My wide velvet trousers are by MarksandSpencer (last year). This year’s version is  similar. My silver sparkly shoes add a touch of bling. similar at Nordstrom and Boden.

During the day I wear my velvet trousers with either my metallic boots or my Paul Green lace-ups. I included them in my capsule Paris wardrobe. You can see how I wore my velvet trousers in Paris in the photo below and here.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I went off to Banana Republic and bought their dark red velvet blazer..well, too fast there! It is stiff and was quickly returned. I do think you have to be careful that the velvet is soft and not like cardboard! And then, I pulled out of the storage closet a gorgeous dark green, luscious, soft velvet sort of "over shirt" that my Mother had given me, from Ann Taylor, back in maybe 1990? 1996? Well, I hung it up, steamed it a bit and it is SO perfect!! What is old is new again, right? It is a lesson (for me) to save what I love!

    • Hi Libby
I agree with you velvet need to drape well. The vintage velvets are divine they were made from real silk. There is nothing worse than stiff velvet. I have not tried the Banana Republic ones.

    • Thanks for your comment Judy. I am loving red this season. So cheerful with the grey London skies.

  • I live in a warm climate, so wearing velvet pants or tops are too much for me! I do have some velvet burnout scarves which are very nice and add that rich touch. You look great in the red coat!

  • Ann Taylor has velvet cami's this season. I just bought every color and they will be my new pj top! They will probably make it with jeans and jackets too. They are loose fitting so the velvet drapes instead of clings. You win for the best look with this jacket of last season and the perfect necklace!!-Bon Weekend My Friend!

    • Thanks for your lovely comment. If I lived in the States I would definitely buy the Ann Taylor cami's they sound gorgeous.

    • Hi Wendy
I definitely can't wear the orange reds or the mustards and yellow khakis. I tend to stick to the blue toned reds and the pastel blues and pinks.

    • Wow, you look wonderful in this outfit. Love the red against the white blouse and black pants. Your coloring is the same as mine so I can also wear these colors except I am shorter so, I have to cut down on the length of the jacket. Love your blog. Keep it up.

  • You are just looking better and better these days. Is it a new "do" or make-up or simply embracing more dramatic colour and silhouettes? You look wonderful and the looks you showcase are lovely.

    • Thank you so much Janet. I am wearing the Lookfabulousforever make-up and I am also trying some brighter colours. I think as my hair has gone grey the brighter tones are suiting me better. I used to wear lots of grey but it now feels a bit drab unless it is a light silver. Plus I have a very good photographer.

  • I really love velvet and I’m eyeing up some quality things in the hope they will survive to the sales! Back in the late 1980s I had a great find at a jumble sale in a rural village- a late 50s early sixties Black silk velvet swing coat which I got for 50p. I wore it for many years (having removed the mink collar!) and then a few years ago spent a few quid getting a repairs done by a dressmaker. As you said the texture is just divine and has lasted much longer than all my more modern velvet, hoping I can squeeze a couple more years from my magenta velvet jeans....
