It is time for our winter coats. Do you need a new one or is your old favourite still in good condition? Buying a Winter coat needs a certain amount of planning. You might like to consider the following questions before shopping.

Does your ideal coat need to be short or long? What will you be wearing it with? What fabric does it need to be made of? This will depend on the climate where you live.

A coat is usually the most important purchase you will make and is likely to take up a considerable amount of your clothing budget. The beautiful coat I have featured in the image above is by Max Mara and is pricey. Was it worth the outlay? In my opinion yes. I purchased it in the mid-nineties and it is still in my wardrobe. This is how I wore it last year. In the first photo more formally and in the second one, I have teamed it with a casual hoodie and tracksuit style trousers. In 2016 I teamed it with a pink sweater.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I too have a Max Mara coat from many years ago. It is long (mid-calf) & black & I purchased it in the late 90’s - it was certainly expensive then. I’ve had it relined (nice weighty silk) after the original lining just wore out & I’ve had lovely wide fur cuffs put on to hide the wear on the edge of the sleeves. It still looks as good as new - & I still love wearing it.

  • Hello Sandra
Thank you for your comment. I too had my Max Mara coat altered. I had it shortened and also the shoulders and the collar. Their coats really do last for years.
