Bags and shoes to update an outfit

Today I thought that I would write about some of the new Autumn accessories – bags and shoes are a good way to update an outfit. There are many new styles currently arriving in the shops. If you are in a bit of a quandary organising or refreshing your Autumn wardrobe it might be a good idea to consider adding a new bag or a new pair of shoes to jazz things up a bit. A colourful bag is a good way to add some colour to an outfit. Alternatively, if you prefer to play safe you can’t go wrong with a neutral colour such as black, navy, brown or beige.

What’s not to like about a new pair of shoes? I know that a couple of my trainers are past their best and need to be replaced. I have featured a couple of the new FitFlop styles. Their shoes really are comfortable and they have some really funky colours and patterns in their new collection. I have not worn a pair of loafers for ages but maybe I should consider them again. I like the look of the slipper loafer, simple yet elegant. They would work with a dress or a pair of trousers.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • You're right, Josephine. Shoes and purses can update an outfit and what female doesn't like that? Unfortunately, the shoe I like is sold out, boo-hoo.

  • Josephine- A modern (meaning up to date) purse & shoes can really pull all your outfits up ten years!!! I just bought two pairs of good leather shoes yesterday and a new leather tote as well!! I didn't even own a tote!!! Just so happy I made these decisions!! I may go back and buy another pair of shoes that I'm also considering!! I'm careful with my money so I don't consider shoes at $200 without some thought!!! Basically, how they'll work in my wardrobe!!!

  • ALL THOSE LOVELY COMFY SHOES YET NONE THAT WOULD FIT MY SLIM FEET. RIEKER ARE THE ONLY ONES I CAN FIND WITH A NARROW FITTING HEEL BUT EVEN THEIR TRAINERS SLIP ON AND OFF HOWEVER TIGHLY I FASTEN THEM. NARROW FITTINGS ARE TOO NARROW ACROSS THE FRONT - FEET SPREAD WITH AGE. ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE?

  • Thank you for the great ideas for crossover handbags! After 35 years maintaining my 260 beloved Austin roses, my shoulder is too painful for my beloved Coach shoulder bag. I had to downsize to a tiny crossover bag! It has been quite traumatic! It’s only large enough for wallet, keys and lippy! But my shoulder is much happier!

  • Hi Sue
I have a similar problem with my left shoulder having fallen off my bike. So these days I only wear small bags.

    • Oh no! Sorry to hear that! It is nice to have someone that understands, however. I like the looks of that little canvas one from Nordstrom. It looks nice and light weight.
