My favourite polo/turtle neck sweaters

How I have worn my polo neck sweaters this season.

Polo neck or turtle neck sweaters (depending on which side of the pond you live) have returned to popularity after many years in the wilderness. The once counter-cultural statement of the 1950’s has evolved into a useful staple piece for your capsule wardrobe.

Despite being very simple they can look very chic, elegant and french. They are useful for layering and adapt well under coats, jackets, (especially the sleeveless ones). They go particularly well with flared jeans and wider trousers and can be layered under sleeveless dresses to cover up the arms. It has even become acceptable to wear polo/turtle sweaters for an evening out especially if they are black or navy and have a touch of shimmer incorporated into the yarn.

The polo neck many not be for everyone, however they do have in my opinion two great advantages. Firstly they keep your neck very warm and cosy in the cold weather and secondly they do a great job of covering up a maybe less than perfect neck.

This is definitely an item you need in your wardrobe during the latter months of the year. A wear-with-anything winter wonder.

Meandem have an interesting and unusual selection. Some of the styles have additional snoods so can be worn 2 ways, either polo or crew neck.

Dark grey cashmere at M&S //  Deep red roll neck by Reiss at John Lewis Pale grey turtleneck at Uniqlo.

M&S have a good selection from cashmere to cotton rich ones that can be layered under other knits.

John Lewis also has an excellent range of roll neck sweaters.

Uniqlo have some reasonably priced turtleneck sweaters. I especially like their merino wool. They make excellent presents.

Nordstrom have a good selection in their autumn sale, some with 40% reduction.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Yay for the turtleneck!!! I have been distraught (maybe a slight exaggeration!) the last few years when they went totally out of style. And now I am happy! They really do keep you warm. A black cashmere turtleneck goes with absolutely anything !

  • I did not realize they were out of style and have many which I love to wear winter-long. The pure wool ones are quite hard to find these days. Thanks for the selection.

  • I love turtlenecks! My faves in order of preference are 1) Landsend.com, 2) Talbots.com and 3) Chicos.com...and I also never knew they went out of style! Maybe they don't go out of style if you live in a place that spells winter ROCHESTER-NY!

    • I don't think they ever went out of style it is more like they are more on the rada at the moment and are having a "moment in the fashion limelight" They will always continue to be a useful addition to a wardrobe especially for warmth.

  • I didn't know the brand Meandem, but thanks to your recommendation, I ordered a black turtleneck. I received it today and couldn't me more happy with it. It's warm and very stylish ! Thank you.

    • I agree Agnes. I have been wearing their sweaters and trousers for a few years now and the fabric is very good quality. They have good sales so I will let everybody know when they start.

  • I live in them over six months of the year to the point people ask me " Where's your turtleneck/skivvy ? " the times I'm not in one :P
