Planning your wardrobe

One of the most useful jackets I have in my wardrobe.

One of the most useful jackets I have in my wardrobe is my green parka. I originally bought it about four years ago from J.Crew. It is the jacket that I reach for as I go out the door to do small errands or some local shopping. Mine is unlined so I can wear it both summer and winter. When it gets really cold I wear a padded gilet underneath.

I have done some research and put together a selection of useful jackets. Styles that I feel would be a good addition to your wardrobe, that is if you did not already own a similar one or might need to replace an old one.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Thank you for your great blog. I’m in Sydney but still need a jacket and love the Uniqlo quilted jackets and coats, good value too .

  • I love the color combination of scarf and hat you've put together with the green parka. It adds a spark that I'd not have thought of doing. Thanks for the idea.

  • Loved the J Crew yellow coat. Tried to buy it, but was informed that, if I wanted to return it, the postage costs would be £35!! Yes, I double checked. How did/do you buy yours, Josephine? We do not have any JCrew stockists nearby, so it has to be online. I cannot risk an internet order with that cost as a possibility. Great shame as it looked nigh on perfect to be my go-to coat for now. I was so delighted to see it as all other puffer styles have a distinct Michelin-man look...... See today’s Guardian for more on that (G2)
Can quite see why your JCrew has been so useful

    • Hello Sara

I agree with you that is a ridiculous price for a return. J.Crew used to have a concession store in John Lewis but I have just checked and it is not there any more. I bought mine in the J.Crew store in Sloane Square about three years ago. On further research, I have read that they have now closed all their UK stores. I use some US brands as I have about 50% USA readers although I am using less than I used to as I know that duty and shipping are getting very costly and taking a long time.

I have also read that J.Crew is having financial difficulties due to the current situation. You could try Lands End, they sometimes have similar items at lower prices. https://www.landsend.co.uk/Search?q=womens+quilted+jackets&simplesearch=#scroll=1669

Barbour https://rstyle.me/+Yus9X87phn3VBcVmJenO4g at John Lewis also have some good jackets but they are a bit more expensive.

      Hope this is useful

      best wishes

      Josephine
