Products to enhance grey and thinning hair

Today I would like to introduce you to products that enhance grey and thinning hair. Over the years many of you have commented on my hair, both the colour and the style. Thank you all so much. As they say our hair should be our “crowning glory”.

I am lucky that I have had thick hair all my life. I wash it about twice a week and generally speaking I find that it is relatively easy to style and maintain. Apart from the fact that it can go frizzy in hot damp weather. My hair does however tend to go brassy if I do not use a good shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for grey hair. Recently I have discovered that my hair is starting to thin at the top of my head. The parting seems to be a bit more visible. This is causing me some considerable consternation.

It has not been easy to find products that both keep my hair a flattering silvery tone and also boost the volume. Most products are designed to do one or the other, so you end up having to mix brands to achieve the desired results without being sure that they will be compatible. I was therefore delighted to be introduced to the new Look Fabulous Forever hair products. They are created to solve both these problems.

I am particularly impressed with the root boost spray you use before styling your hair.

I have long been a fan of Tricia’s Look Fabulous Forever make-up so it is great to have the addition of hair products that are specially created to solve our hair issues as we get older.

Below are two images of my hair after two hair washes using my new Look Fabulous Forever hair products. Even my husband commented that my hair was looking particularly good.

You might be interested in an interview and video I did with Tricia in 2017 when we discussed fashion and make-up for older women.

Disclaimer: The hair products were kindly gifted to me. All opinions are my own.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I hope you do a follow up about this product in about 4 or 5 months as to any hair regrowth or hair loss.
Thanks for sending helpful ideas our way!

  • I've found most purple shampoos leave far too much colour, and build up is problematic. Great to hear you have found a good one along with the root lift spray.
For NZ/Aus readers I can recommend Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel shampoo, Young Again treatment oil (in place of conditioner) together with Body Builder Volumising mousse. These all work with my layered, loose, longer style.
Quite a mission finding products for us 70+ "invisibles" that take account of us wanting to stay stylish here in NZ's small market.

    • Hello Angela
I never really think of myself as invisible. I do think that as we are a growing demographic brands are beginning to realise that we do need specialist products.

  • I too have noticed that I’ve had hair loss over the past year or so which i find very worrying. Lots of my hair is coming out every time I wash it and there is definitely less as I style it. I also bought Tricia’s root boost spray which I’m very impressed with. I’ve also started taking Viviscal twice a day and I think I’m loosing less hair although I’m not convinced yet that I’ve got new hair growth but I’ve only been taking the tablets for a couple of months. Oh gosh if this is what old age brings then I don’t like it !!
    Keep up the good work.

    • Hello Jackie
I have not heard of Viviscal. I will do some research. I sprinkle a tablespoon of collagen on my cereal every morning in the hope that it might help. I do already take zinc and B3 etc.

  • Thanks Josephine, I too have always had thick hair, which for many years I had coloured blonde. Following chemo in 2014 my hair grew back still quite thick and grey. I struggled to find a good shampoo to keep the grey fresh and not brassy, and settled on L’Oréal silver shampoo.
However, I am now on long term chemo and medication which causes many side effects including thinning hair. I have looked for products to help, but as yet have not found one.
I was interested to read that you were using LFF products, as I use, and like some of the makeup, but I hadn’t even thought about the hair products. I shall now give these a try.
I have followed you for many years and enjoy reading your blog. Many thanks

    • Hello Jan
Thank you for your comment. I have a friend who is currently undergoing chemo. We used to work together as Image Consultants. She is researching a variety of products to help her. I am hoping at some stage that she will write a guest post for my blog as I am sure many of my readers are going through similar experiences.
