Wrap up warm in a puffer jacket

It doesn’t get any cosier than snuggling up in a puffer jacket when the temperature drops. My tried and tested puffer that I purchased about four years ago is from Gerard Darel. It is my go-to piece when it is cold outside. I am a great fan of the “puffer”. You can see how I have worn different versions in previous posts here and here.

You may think that padded jackets can make us look like “the Michelin man” especially if you are petite.  However, there are many ways to wear a puffer jacket and still look chic. I would suggest keeping your trousers or skirts slim to balance your silhouette.

A  couple of stand out accessories can make all the difference between “bag lady” and “elegant Parisienne”.

  • Well I've just bought a Parka and I love it! It has a detachable hood as I live in the country with the sea nearby and the wind can at times be strong.
    I am petite but the parka doesn't swamp me and I have already had several complimentary remarks, which is nice. Teamed with black trousers, my boots, and a pretty scarf, the parka keeps me warm. Oddly, my long black cashmere coat now looks a bit old-fashioned.

  • I was given the much talked about puffer jacket from Uniqlo and just love it! So lightweight. Comes in its own little bag. So I am a big fan now!

    • I agree Libby the Uniqlo ones are great. When my current one wears out I may well buy a Uniqlo one

  • I have several puffer coats from LL Bean. They range from mid-calf to the length you are wearing. The longer one was put to good use this week as the wind chill was -27C and wind gusts up to 60k. I live in Ontario Canada and this is typical of our winters. Today is warmer at wind chill -17C.

  • Hello Josephine, from snowy, cold Toronto. Bought a black,Puffer knee length jacket last year. Your comment about "bag" lady or "Elegant Parisienne" struck a cord. At the end of the season I definitely felt like the former. Now this year I am upping the accessories. Not quite at the beret or sparkly gloves stage yet but who knows? I very much enjoy your blog.

  • Hi Josephine! Hope you're having a great day. I can't wear a puffer coat. I would look like the Pillsbury dough boy on steriods! I am not small like you. You look nice in it. I am sure it will keep you warm . I live in Michigan , US and we just had 9 to 10 inches of snow here where I live so a puffer coat would be good. God bless and happy christmas !

  • I had a dark brown puffer coat in 2007 from Per Una at M&S. It lasted so well despite a lot of wear. TOP TIP - always fasten pocket zips as they can catch the sleeves... I now have one from Monsoon but it's a little too bulky and needs its own chair in a café!
