Wrap up warm in a puffer jacket

It doesn’t get any cosier than snuggling up in a puffer jacket when the temperature drops. My tried and tested puffer that I purchased about four years ago is from Gerard Darel. It is my go-to piece when it is cold outside. I am a great fan of the “puffer”. You can see how I have worn different versions in previous posts here and here.

Blue puffer jacket Gerard Darel (similar) // Black trousers Hopefashion // Grey ugg boots US & UK // Beret St.Tropez market (similar). Etsy also has some good ones //  Grey scarf old (similar UK & US)

You may think that padded jackets can make us look like “the Michelin man” especially if you are petite.  However, there are many ways to wear a puffer jacket and still look chic. I would suggest keeping your trousers or skirts slim to balance your silhouette.

A  couple of stand out accessories can make all the difference between “bag lady” and “elegant Parisienne”.

I love my sparkly gloves. I bought them this time last year during a visit to Paris. (Similar)

Photographs were taken in Richmond Park on a very cold morning by Laura Hines. Follow her Instagram. The colours are not true in the photo above as the jacket looks navy but I just love the way Laura has captured the sunburst.

Yes, You can be both cosy and chic.

Lands’ End has some excellent puffer jackets and they are currently offering 50% reduction on full priced items. Enter code and pin at the top of the page at checkout.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Well I've just bought a Parka and I love it! It has a detachable hood as I live in the country with the sea nearby and the wind can at times be strong.
I am petite but the parka doesn't swamp me and I have already had several complimentary remarks, which is nice. Teamed with black trousers, my boots, and a pretty scarf, the parka keeps me warm. Oddly, my long black cashmere coat now looks a bit old-fashioned.

  • I was given the much talked about puffer jacket from Uniqlo and just love it! So lightweight. Comes in its own little bag. So I am a big fan now!

    • I agree Libby the Uniqlo ones are great. When my current one wears out I may well buy a Uniqlo one

  • I have several puffer coats from LL Bean. They range from mid-calf to the length you are wearing. The longer one was put to good use this week as the wind chill was -27C and wind gusts up to 60k. I live in Ontario Canada and this is typical of our winters. Today is warmer at wind chill -17C.

  • Hello Josephine, from snowy, cold Toronto. Bought a black,Puffer knee length jacket last year. Your comment about "bag" lady or "Elegant Parisienne" struck a cord. At the end of the season I definitely felt like the former. Now this year I am upping the accessories. Not quite at the beret or sparkly gloves stage yet but who knows? I very much enjoy your blog.

  • Hi Josephine! Hope you're having a great day. I can't wear a puffer coat. I would look like the Pillsbury dough boy on steriods! I am not small like you. You look nice in it. I am sure it will keep you warm . I live in Michigan , US and we just had 9 to 10 inches of snow here where I live so a puffer coat would be good. God bless and happy christmas !

  • Josephine, I do believe all the blues are *your* color. And you always look so happy in the lovely photographs that your friend takes.

Sending wishes to you and yours for a Merry Christmas and wishing for all of us a more peaceful trip around the sun in 2018.

  • I had a dark brown puffer coat in 2007 from Per Una at M&S. It lasted so well despite a lot of wear. TOP TIP - always fasten pocket zips as they can catch the sleeves... I now have one from Monsoon but it's a little too bulky and needs its own chair in a café!

  • Thank you for all your comments. It has been a busy weekend as we had our family Christmas lunch on Saturday. We are heading off for France this Thursday.
