Recommended films and series for May

My recommended films and series for May. This month I have chosen a mixture of old and new films and series. I am aware that many of you will have already watched the current favourites so I have gone back a few years and picked a couple that I enjoyed then and would happily watch again.

Details of loungewear:

Joggers JohnLewis&Partners | Turquoise throw JohnLewis&Partners | Sweatshirt Whistles JohnLewis&Partners | White slides Fitflop (also available in red, black & navy) | Cream tee People tree (organic cotton) | Cushion MarksandSpencer | Bunny mug MarksandSpencer.

The Trial of the Chicago 7 – Netflix. One of the best films I have watched for some time. Brilliant performance from top actors including Eddie Redmayne who played Tom Hayden. The film is set in 1968 at the height of the Vietnam war. It was a period of great civil unrest. Following a demonstration in Chicago protesting against the Vietnam war, seven of the leading demonstrators were put on trial for inciting violence. Loved the hippie costumes.

Sixty Six – Netflix. I came across this film quite accidentally. It turned out to be very moving. A 12-year-old Londoner struggles to adjust his expectations when England is scheduled to play in the world cup finals the same day as his bar mitzvah. Helen Bonham Carter is excellent as his mother.

Eat Pray Love – Netflix. I watched this film years ago. It is a light-hearted romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts as Liz Gilbert. Liz has recently divorced her husband and decides to embark on a journey across the world in an attempt to find her true self.

Shades of Love – Amazon prime. This film is based on the novel by Rosamunde Pilcher. This mini-series is set in Balnaird House, an estate in the Scottish Highlands. It is home to the venerable Aird family. The family has a number of secrets that are known only by the aging matriarch Violet. Full of heartbreak, passion and betrayal. This kept me engaged for many an evening.

Indian summers – Amazon Prime I watched this series a few years ago and came across it the other day. It is a British drama series that originally aired on Channel 4. The show details the events of summers spent at Simla, in the foothills of the Himalayas. The film portrays members of the British governing and trading community at the time of the Raj. The first series is set in 1932. An interesting depiction of that era and the secrets held by the various characters. Julie Walters is great in it.

If you missed last months list here is a link. Now over to you what have you been watching recently.

A few home comforts:

Chicatanyage

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I've watched: Anne with an E (N) ; Lupin (N) ; Jumanji, The Next Level (Prime) ; Spielberg's "Taken" (Prime).

  • Hi, Josephine!

I didn’t get a chance to comment on your last post but wanted to say that your hairstyle is so becoming on you. I also like the mint green shades you’ve chosen for your loungewear recommendations.

I’ve not been watching television recently though I have been reading books. Thankfully my family (from grandchild age 12 through great-grandparent age 89) are now vaccinated, as well as all of my friends. The government removed social distancing and mask requirements for all vaccinated people, so we have blessedly returned to pre-pandemic life and are out and about again. It’s almost surreal to have activities with family and friends to look forward to and a reason to dress nicely each day.

We’ve recently spent a week with our daughter (a frontline nurse in an Atlanta hospital) who we haven’t seen in 14 months. It’s been such a long and stressful year that I almost broke down in tears to see her beautiful face.

I’m assuming y’all will soon be returning to normal life in the very near future (if you haven’t already), as I’ve heard vaccinations are going quite well in England. Are you traveling to France this spring or summer? I will look forward to seeing your posts from there!

Sending wishes from Charleston for all things good and wonderful!

    • Hello Nancy
Thank you for your compliment on my hairstyle. We are slowly getting back to normal life and are hoping to get to France on 13th June but who knows.
