Beauty at any age

Skincare for women over 50

As I have not written a post on beauty products for several months I thought I would do an update on skincare for women over 50. I stick to the same routine on a day to day basis. It consists of a nightly, or sometimes every other night, dose of a Retinol serum. I get these product through my dermatologist.

However after the harsh winter months and the ever increasing air pollution in our cities I felt it was time to add a few more “defense” products to my current regime.

DETAILS OF PRODUCTS IN THE IMAGE: 1.Transfhormulas   2. Filgora Time-Filler at Lookfantastic and Nordstrom 3. Nars primer at Nordstrom and feelunique 4.Ren anti pollution mist at Lookfastastic  and Nordstrom

On my visit to Paris last year Susan of Unefemme and I visited a fantastic chemist. It stocked a wide range of excellent skincare products at reduced prices. It felt like being a kid in a sweetshop. You can see by the clock above the door how early we were prepared to get up in order to arrive before it became too crowded. There was so much choice it was a tad confusing. Susan said that she used the Filorga Time-filler and liked it so I thought I would try it. I am very glad I did as it is excellent. The Filgora brand is well known and respected in France.

Now for eye-care. I must admit that I am a bit lazy when it comes to applying eye cream. I know that it makes a difference when I make the effort to apply a good quality cream. I have been using the transformulas eye lightening serum and their eye radiance for some time. So I was very happy to be introduced to their Marine eye-zone cream. I have been applying it night and morning for the last couple of weeks and love it. It is very light and glides on. I will report back in about a months time with my assessment of the overall effects.

The other two products I am trying are the Nars primer. I have to use a SPF50 suncream every day due to my history with skin cancer. As I like to apply a primer this can add up to a lot of layers. So I was thrilled to find a good primer with a SPF50. It has made my morning routine quicker and less fiddly.

Finally the most significant product is the REN anti-pollution mist. I wrote a post on air pollution and the damage it does to the skin here. I have been shocked recently by the level of pollution both in France and the UK. When I was in Paris you could travel on the metro for free as the pollution level was extremely high. The government hoped to encourage people to leave their cars at home. You could actually see the grey haze in the sky. London has also been on high pollution alert for the past few weeks as the weather here has been cold and damp.

Do share your tips and tricks on how you keep your skin in good condition. Especially how you protect it from the ever growing risk of pollution.

PS. I have updated my shop with additional transitional outerwear.

Disclosure: The Transfhormulas eye cream was gifted to me. All opinions are my own.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Thanks for the article. Would you mind explaining what order you use the products in? I never know how to do that.
    Thanks.

    • Hi Malone
Good question it can be a bit confusing. I use the eye cream directly after cleansing morning and evening. The Filgora in the morning after cleansing (it is concentrated so I find I don't need a moisturiser as well) Then the SPF 50 Primer (before I had to use a SPF50 suncream + a primer). Then I spritz the Ren anti pollution mist over my foundation when I am in London. It sounds a lot but it really only takes about 4/5 mins. I probably won't use the Ren mist when I am in France as I don't think the air is so polluted down there.

  • I am intrigues that your GP prescribes retinol products. On what basis is this done and what is it that you use ?

    • Hi Dawn
It is not my GP who prescribes my retinol. The plastic surgeon who reconstructed the end of my nose following the removal of a melanoma recommended a skin clinic. I go there once a year. They test my skin on a computer to check for sun damage and recommend relevant treatment. My current retinol is Retriderm with 0.5% retinol. I have to wear SPF50 every day.

  • Hello. I'm not very good in taking care of my skin. I know, I should have, but I a kind of think the whole ting i all about gens. Most of my products are from no7 and I like them. I live in Norway and I feel the air here is quite clean and fresh. Wish you a wonderful weekend.

    • Hi Ingrid
I think you are right about the gens playing an important part in skin quality. I am lucky that my mother had good skin. A consultant once said to me "choose your parents wisely and wear sunscreen". On that note I was not so lucky to grow up in an era when we were all sun worshipers and SPF skincare hardly existed. I find that my skincare regime helps to redress some of the sun damage such as fading those pesky brown sun spots.

  • Hi Josephine,

I love your articles, and this, I'm definitely sharing with my Mom. Can you recommend a good moisturizer for her? Her skin type is a bit oily. Thanks!

    • Hi Jenny
Thanks for your comment. I don't think that I can suggest a product for oily skin as mine is quite try and I only recommend products that I have tried. I would suggest that your mom visits a good local beauty salon for advice.

      • Thank you very much for your reply Josephine :) I will visit a local beauty salon with her for a consultation this weekend.

        Jenny

  • Hi Josephine,

I love products from NARS, though I'm 20 years younger from 50, I loved there products. My mom always wear makeup because she told me that women like her should also enjoy life and be chic.

  • hi there. I would like to ask your opinion on whether it is advisable to use Filorga time filler in your 20s. I am 26 and I have fine lines as everybody on my forehead, neck, smile lines but I wasn't sure whether this cream is too strong for my face. I actually bought it today as it was recommended to me but perhaps to gift it to my mom. Thank you!
