Some days you want a simple classic outfit

Some days you want a simple classic outfit in neutral tones. According to my Instagram feed pairing a simple white shirt with beige trousers is all the rage. Lightweight beige trousers offer a good alternative to jeans when you still want to create a casual look. Add a breezy white shirt, mine is from Hush. They only have small sizes left but it does come up very big. Add simple accessories to complete the look.

I have always favoured this simple classic pairing as you can see from a previous post in May 2019 where I am wearing my beige trousers with a similar white shirt.

In the two photos above I have gathered my oversized shirt and tied it in a knot at the front. This alters the proportions of the outfit and gives a slight emphasis to the waist. It is worth experimenting with this look; as you never know it just might suit your figure proportions. I am in favour of trying new ways of wearing our classics. It prevents us from becoming bored with our current staples and helps us to get more wear out of our current wardrobes.

In this photo I am wearing my oversized white shirt in the traditional way. It would look just as good slung over a swimsuit if you are going to the beach or teamed a pair of shorts. I have kept my accessories simple with my brown snake print sandals.

Items to help you create a classic simple outfit like the one I am wearing. If light neutrals colours do not work for you you could always substitute a brightly coloured oversize shirt and wear it your way.

Do you find that some days you just want to wear a simple classic outfit?

I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I have seen several bloggers use white with off white pants and it really does look clean and classic. I would have never thought to do that. Using a blouse instead of a sweater is a great idea when going from heat to air conditioning and back again.

    • Hello Susan

Thank you for your comment. You can also wear the shirt over a tee if it is a bit cooler.

  • This is an “everywoman”, for the ages outfit. I love it. While the accessorizing options are endless, I love the rich color of your sandals, the chunky necklace, belt and hat. Shirt looks good both ways. You also have the option to roll up the sleeves! Great reminder post on how chic and breezy whites and beige-tones are. This outfit suits all sizes, figure types and coloring and can be done at any price point. Thank you!

    • Thank you for your comment Kathleen. Yes I often roll up the sleeves on my white shirt.

  • I love this look, it reminds me of the costuming in the film Out of Africa. And yes I love to wear simple classic outfits. Very pretty! Josephine, I now have to wear orthotic inserts in my shoes because of a foot injury and anticipate this will always be the case. Thus I can't really wear any sandals or cute flats, only running shoes. This is forcing wardrobe changes! I now can't wear slim ankle pants or cropped pants and need to wear palazzo pants or at least very long pants. I have put my cropped pants and slim ankle pants aside. I can wear long midi skirts though! It's an adjustment!

    • Hi Francie
I understand how you feel. I had to wear orthotic inserts in the 1990s before trainers/sneakers were fashionable. I bought a pair of very expensive Todds lace-ups which looked smart and lasted for years.

  • Perfect! Love the outfit both ways but especially the "traditional way." Very classy.
