Style for women over 50

Styling tips to keep us looking fresh in winter

At this time of year, you are probably getting a bit fed up with your dark colours and bulky layers. We still need the warmth, at least in the northern hemisphere. In this post, I have listed some simple styling tips to keep us looking fresh in winter. Even though the skies are still overcast you can add a touch of pizzaz to your wardrobe.

Add some playful winter accessories:

By adding some playful accessories to your winter wardrobes you can lighten your look. Perhaps you could add a new pair of shoes or boots that you can wear now and that will transition well into early Spring. I am a great fan of sneakers, especially as I seem to have developed some arthritis in my toes, I find that they are the most comfortable shoes to wear on a day to day basis.

Alternatively what about a brightly coloured handbag.

Avoiding the very dark colours near our faces can lift our spirits as well as our look. Maybe add a touch of our best colours in the form of a lightweight sweater or one of the new season’s blouses.

Add a few quirky details.

Even the smallest detail like the addition of some animal print can help to lift our winter wardrobes.

Don’t underestimate the power of statement jewellery

A few fun pieces of costume jewellery can lift the most sombre of dark colours. How about some statement earrings or a stand out necklace.

Wear a puffer instead of a classic winter coat

Parisienne women seem to live in their puffers in the winter months. Just add a funky scarf et voila you can look both youthful and on-trend. There’s a time and a place for a classic wool coat, but if you want to take years off of your look, wear a puffer.

I often swap neutral-coloured boots for cool sneakers in the winter, even if my outfit is a bit fancy. I just find that it gives the whole look a bit of youthful edge.

Avoid wearing all black.

Now don’t get me wrong I still love wearing my tried and trusted black. However when the skies are dark grey and there is not much light I find that I prefer my cheerful colours especially the pink coat I purchased from Hobbs a couple of years ago. They have some excellent coloured coats ; many now on sale. Try to mix in colour somewhere in your outfit.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.
