Summer tops that flatter the shoulders

I have always loved off the shoulder tops. I can remember having some beautiful ones in my 20s; that I wore every summer. I think I must have realised that it flattered my “pear shaped” figure. Not that I had heard of a woman’s body being compared to a fruit back then.

Some things definitely change and one of them is the shape of our bodies as we get older; the proliferation of those pesky wrinkles and certain muscles that have given up holding things together.

Luckily our shoulders seem to be immune from the above and can be an area that we can still continue to expose without looking too mutton.  At least that is my opinion.  As these tops are called “Bardot” I simply have to take mine with me on my next trip to St. Tropez. The one I am wearing is cotton by Whistles. This is now sold out however they are now offering a similar one in linen.  I am looking forward to wearing mine on balmy evenings in the South of France.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • That top definitely has a very côte d'azur feel to it. Very fresh and light! Lovely photos too, and we will have to visit that garden when we're there in July.

  • You look real cute in that top. I have been looking at them also, but couldn't decide if I am just wanting to go back to "that time" and make a fool of myself.
Yes, it does look good on you and I may reconsider. Thank you. Joelle (from Miami, Florida)

  • I like the off-the-shoulder tops that have wide straps, so you can wear a normal bra, but still have the bare shoulders.

    • Hi Rita
I agree bras are a problem with off the shoulder tops. I had to go out and buy a new one before the photos. I needed one anyway to take to France as I often wear one there.

  • Oh, but I DO think shoulders are one of the things that change the most with age! I am hesitant to even wear a wide (not to mention low) neckline. My skin shows lots of the sun damage and subsequent repair on my shoulders and around my neck. No, I try to wear big necklaces or a light scarf if at all possible. Wish I could wear these and feel comfortable!

  • Such a nice fresh look. Not for my body shape either, alas, I need a bra with the usual hoist mechanism!
And thanks for sharing the azeleas, I've walked through the park a few times when staying in St Margaret's, but never in spring. Beautiful!

  • Thank you, Josephine, for your marvelous sense of style. I am new to your blog. I plan to be a regular follower.
