At the height of summer it is vitally important to protect your skin against the damaging rays of the sun especially the delicate face area. As well as applying copious amounts of Factor 50 sunscreen I am a great believer in wearing a protective sunhat. Not only does it protect your skin from the damaging UV rays but also adds panache to an outfit.
The one I am wearing came from South Africa and was given to me by a friend who was over in London for a two week trip. It was a very thoughtful gift as she knew that I had had problems a couple of years ago with a Basal Cell Carcinoma caused by way to much sun exposure in my youth. Several readers asked me where they could find a similar sunhat. So I did some research. I discovered that Orvis, a brand normally known as a supplier of traditional hunting, shooting and fishing apparel are offering a similar style in three colours.
I can’t stress enough the importance of protecting our delicate skin from the suns rays. I wear a factor SPF 50 sunscreen on my face all year round. If you live in a hot climate wear those sunhats.

This is a great hat! We do have to be so careful!
These are great hats. I'm hoping to wear mine more this summer.
Thank you for this Josephine, as an Australian who spent her youth basted in baby oil while laying on the beach (cringe!!) this is great information for me.
An important topic! I would like to add Coolibar to the list of companies that makes these kinds of hats. They are located in the US but they ship worldwide.
This winter I underwent an operation on my arm to remove a malignant melanoma. I am now under strict instructions not to go in the sun under any circumstances. Whilst I quite like the idea of a parasol, I hate the factor 50 sunscreen I have been prescribed. It is too white and heavy for summer. It's an Australian brand called Sunsense. Could I ask you which brand you use on your face? I'm using Piz Buin, but not sure how effective it is.
Best wishes
Catherine
I too have recently had a basal cell carcinoma, so I'm trying to be more diligent with sunscreen and hats, especially as I live in a hot climate. My problem is the opposite of Catherine, above, though; I have quite a large head, and most women's hats are "one size fits all". Well, they don't fit me! I have to wear men's hats unless I can find the rare size L women's hat.
Hi Jill Ann
I too like Men's hats and buy the marksandspencer straw panama hats in the summer except I have to make them smaller as I have quite a small head. However it is easier to do it that way round.
Hi Jane
I agree it is a very nice hat and I would wear it round London however for hot sun and France I feel I need one with a SPF factor.
I am religious about sunblock and about hat wearing! Your blue hat is a lovely shape and color and looks gorgeous on you.
