Every year on the 1st week-end of the half term school holidays, from Friday to Monday, the streets of St Tropez are invaded by crowds of frantic shoppers. They hit the narrow streets in a frenzied attempt to grap the best bargains.Stands are laid out in front of shop windows, racks of clothes are pushed along with items at knock down prices. A large proportion of the shops, including some but not all of the expensive designer labels participate in 3 days of what can only be described as “the sale or sales of the century”. Prices are marked down by as much as 50% or even 70%. My friend and I were up early and caught the 8.55 bus, luckily the driver took some short cuts over the hills as the roads were as congested as in the height of the summer season and the car parks were all full by 10.00. At this event first come means first served!
Beyond the bargains, the atmosphere is warm and friendly. Luckily the sun was shining and we stopped at a local cafe for lunch and a well deserved glass of rose.
