Update on my summer makeup

Occasionally we need to reassess our make-up especially as the seasons change. Today I thought that I would give you an update on my summer makeup routine. It is so easy to get stuck in a rut and keep using the same old stuff some of which may be too dark or too heavy for this time of year.

My makeup routine

If I am having my photograph taken or am going out (not very applicable recently) I will use my foundation no.2.5 from Lookfabulousforever. Then I add a light dusting of my Makeup forever translucent powder. Makeup forever an excellent brand, especially for photography purposes. I bought mine in France. It does not seem to be available in the UK however you can always order it from their french site. The links above are to the US site.

The Mac paint pot can be used on its own to give a very light coverage or as an eyeshadow base. If I want more colour I will add my new lilac matt eyeshadow from Lookfabulousforrever. Their instant bright highlighter adds a touch of shimmer to the brow bone and top of the cheeks.

This is currently my everyday regime. I find that putting on at least some make-up has become an early morning routine even if all I am doing is working from home or going for a walk. It helps to lift my spirits.

I do feel that as we get older we do need some colour on our faces. You can see me having a make-over by Tricia Cusden founder of Lookfabulousforever here.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • You are so right Josephine about makeup. If you are young and fresh-faced, ok you can get by with a naked face but older gals need a bit of colour. Your advice is excellent!

  • Yes, I wear a smidgeon. My necessities are eyebrow pencil, under eye concealer, and if it's a no-mask situation, lipstick. If I'm trying to look better I add a nude-for-me eye shadow, Laura Mercier eye caviar stick, which I use as a smudgy eyeliner, and a tiny bit of bronzer. With contact lenses, I don't like to wear mascara, but do curl my lashes. I read that if you have eye makeup plus bronzer or blush, then you should use a nude lipstick, but if you don't have bronzer, then you can use a bright lipstick; I tried this and think it's true for me. I always wipe off a little of everything and then it looks better.

  • Wearing makeup is, for me, the same as getting dressed........never naked! It's part of who I am and I enjoy the process. Lipstick and eye brows are my desert island picks. With the decision to transition to grey hair, it's place in my routine will be more important than ever. Being retired gives me free rein to take my time to ensure it never looks overdone.
