Will you be going out and about over the next few weeks and over the Christmas period? Maybe you will be visiting friends and family as we have more freedom this year. Even if you are staying quietly at home what will you be wearing this season? It is nice to dress up even though you may not be choosing the sequins and sparkles this year. I have put together a couple of outfits that might fit the bill. Casual yet still a notch above everyday wear.

I have particularly chosen items that you can use after all the tinsel has been packed away for another year. I have checked that the tops are washable, particularly important if you are the hostess and cooking the Christmas turkey. Even if you wear an apron it is possible to get grease marks. Best not to wear silk although there is a trick using talcum powder to remove grease stains.

I have chosen a skirt in the first collage as whenever I wear a skirt or dress I feel more feminine however this is a personal choice.

The second outfit consists of a wide-leg pair of velvet trousers. As I have written before in my opinion velvet can be worn day or evening. I have included cashmere shawls in both outfits. I always take a wrap with me when I am visiting friends or family. Sometimes their idea of a warm house is different to mine.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • Love the comment about friends’ ideas about warm houses. Your friends must be very much like mine! At times, a cashmere blanket would barely suffice, methinks. In my book, style and chilliness rarely go together; there are times when all I can think of is how cold I am and I’d happily don any tatty old thing in exchange for a rise in temperature.

  • Beautiful outfits, especially the wide legged velvet pants. Today for errands and dog walking I'm wearing navy Asquith palazzo pants and matching top with bright green thin wool scarf/shawl-- you introduced me to Asquith, Josephine, and sent me the scarf from the St. Tropez market-- thank you very much! Yesterday for a Christmas club meeting and luncheon I wore black wide legged pants, bronze-gold satin top, camel boy coat and printed cashmere scarf in blues and bronze, and felt very dressed up. We're not doing much this season because of the public health situation but I can still lay out my clothes for the next day and feel festive in the grocery store!

  • I just LOVE your second outfit with the red pants. I only wear skirts and dresses but I do admire other women in looser pants. I find them very chic!! You are such a stylish women!!

  • The main use for my bathroom talcum powder is to throw on oily splashes, usually from salad dressings. Haha...:-)

  • We will be very low key again this year. I do miss dressing up for Christmas parties as I enjoy occasions that are an excuse for going more glam and as an extrovert I really miss parties and big events in general. However like many others I have someone in the house who are extremely Covid vulnerable so such things will have to wait.
I’m intrigued by the talcum powder thing, what exactly do you do with it? Sprinkle on then wash off?

    • You're right about talc, it absorbs the oil and you wash as normal. Works best if the talc goes on soon after. I put it on both sides if possible.
