What I wore to the baby shower last Sunday.
Grey leather bucket bag available at theoutnet
Holding a baby shower is, as far as I am aware, a fairly new tradition in the UK. At least it did not seem to be an event that happened when I had my children.
When I looked it up in Wikipedia I got the following description.
“A baby shower is a way to celebrate the pending or recent birth of a child by presenting gifts to the mother at a party.”
“The term shower is often assumed to mean that the expectant mother is “showered” with gifts. The related custom bridal shower may have derived its name from the custom in Victorian times for the presents to be put inside a parasol, which when opened would “shower” the bride-to-be with gifts.”
The custom seems to be prevalent in many countries however may take different forms in each.
Ours was a very joyous affair and in this case the baby was also present.
Luckily the weather was clement so I decided to wear a M&S coat I bought last year. I teamed it with a pair of cream wide leg trousers, a silky cream top, flat shoes and my lovely grey bag which I have found really useful this summer and will continue to use in early autumn. It was from theoutset and is still available.
I found a very similar coat at John Lewis and also some very good value coats at M&S. If you are looking for a new coat it might be a good time to buy as there is a promotion on at the moment. This dusty blue one is reduced to £47.20.
My linen trousers are a few years old. I found a pair at John Lewis reduced to £39 if you are contemplating a late summer break. Also a couple of pairs at Nordstrom also on sale here and here.
PS. I will be working on all your great suggestions for future posts and will answer as many of your questions and incorporate as many of your requests as I possibly can in the coming months.

You look gorgeous! What a great coat and overall style!
You look lovely. I just left OXON for Vancouver for a few months and understand completely about the difference in customs. Sometimes it's hard to flip from one country to the other, ( usually only jet lag and several days between blog post result), but I'm glad that more North American customs are catching on in E. x
Pretty outfit! May I belatedly add to the comments for future posts - I would love to see more outfits for that elusive 'smart casual' category which I and my friends find so difficult. I am heartily sick of the body con dress, my style is more fluid - think Armani - how I wish I could!
Also, I live near Marlbough, Wiltshire, a complete style desert and would welcome any recommendations for boutiques in the South West.
Thank you
Hi Linda
Smart casual is on my list. Not sure I know any boutiques in that area. I often find the best way is to buy the local county magazine they often carry good ads for boutiques in the area.
beautiful outfit! you must be much more formal in the UK. the baby showers i've been to in the US are incredibly casual!
Hi Sally
It was not that formal however I have decided to wear some of my smarter clothes more often rather than have them hanging in my wardrobe. It was not a very expensive coat definitely under £100.
Lovely!!!
Hi Josephine. I love your look I have bought a couple of wide leg Winser London trousers on your recommendation. Could you advise what tops and shoes suit that look? I would love you to put this on your ever expanding to do list. Thanks. Margo
These outfits are very beautiful. It looks a perfect collection of accessories.
I like your fashion sense.
you look so elegantly happy!
This is a very soft, pretty look. It really suits you!
