London Capsule
What to pack for an autumn trip to London?
I have had several readers contact me asking my advice as to what they should wear and pack for their forthcoming trip to our often wet and windy island.
Now if I could accurately predict our mercurial weather I would be much in demand working for the meteorological office rather than writing this blog. As I can’t perform this impossible task I have put together a capsule wardrobe for a visit to London or any other of our thriving cities.
I have based my choices on items that can be layered and included practical footwear and some waterproof pieces.
I would highly recommend some thermal or silk underwear. They are light, easy to pack. If you choose a black or cream in good quality material they can also double as another top under a jacket or cardigan. Landsend offer some good ones as do John Lewis.

I'm looking at this and imagining this would work for an upcoming trip to Germany in November. Thanks, I especially love the capes!
Hi Marguerite
Yes I think we have relatively similar climates however if you are going into the mountains I think you might need some warmer outerwear.
Wow THANK you for this!! I need a post like this! <3
I see only one pair of pants, and one dress; how many days would you estimate this wardrobe would work for on holiday?
Hi Mariann
I think that the answer to your question is very individual. The idea of my capsule was mainly to suggest some basics that would be useful for our climate. You could certainly add another couple of trousers or a skirt. Personally the selection I have chosen would easily last me a long week-end (4 days) and possibly even a week. The trousers and dress I have chosen are both washable. If you are staying in a hotel you could use their laundry service. I always travel with spot remover and some baby powder (magic for grease stains).
I used to run 2 day seminars in Europe and managed to pack all my equipment (there was a lot) plus make-up and a wardrobe that needed to cover 2 days training plus 2 dinners. It is amazing how creative one can be with less.
This is a wonderful and streamlined capsule! I think the Fossil bag is perfect with its zippered top and the shoes are an elegant and sensible choice for walking. This is the time of year I associate with traveling to London. I can't wait for your next post.
What about an autumn trip to Istanbul? Will htis work? Have you been? We're leaving early October!
Hi Meryl
Sorry can't really help on this one. I did a capsule for a trip to Morocco. Morocco wardrobewhere it was hot in the day and got chilly at night. Layers were the answer, natural fabrics and cardigans and pashminas for the evenings.
