What to wear for a summer visit to Kew Gardens

Susan of Unefemme, her husband and I spent a wonderful summer’s day visiting Kew botanical gardens at the beginning of July. We had arranged in advance for my photographer Laura Hines to meet us there and to take some photos as we explored the delights of the glorious scenery. The only question was to ask ourselves what to wear for a summer visit to Kew Gardens.

I kept my outfit really simple. I am wearing a pair of white linen trouser (several years old by Eileen Fisher) and a white shirt. Parrot and animal scarf from Chicatanyage scarf shop. Yellow bag similar.

The stunning exhibition of glass sculptures “Reflections on Nature” by Chihuly, an American sculptor and entrepreneur runs till 27th October and adds another dimension to the atmosphere and floral displays.

White tee shirt from Cos. I find this style of tee very flattering as it tapers towards the hemline for an A-line fit. I have several in different colours. My sandals are a few years old by Gabor similar. I found the same style in bronze. My blue exotic fish print scarf from Chicatanyage scarf shop.

Versatility and how to extend your wardrobe. I am wearing my exotic fish print scarf as a sarong over my cream linen trousers. If I was on the beach I would wear it without the trousers. My blue bead necklace is from my favourite jewellery stall in Grimaud market Lesbijouxdenatascha

Susan and I relaxing, enjoying the sun in the peaceful surroundings of Kew Gardens. Well worth a visit if you are visiting the UK.

You might be interested to see what I wore for a visit to Kew Gardens a couple of years ago. As I believe in buying clothes that will last more than one season I still have and wear the print trousers and top and the cream jacket that I wore back then.

I write a fashion and beauty blog for women over 50 with the aim of inspiring mature women to continue to enjoy and have fun with their fashion choices. I have spent most of my working life in some way connected to fashion. I started my career in Fashion PR and then trained as an Image Consultant when my children were young. I subsequently worked in the corporate world running seminars, doing private coaching and speaking at conferences. I started my blog in 2009 as I wanted to share my years of experience working in the world of fashion. I truly believe we can continue to have confidence in the way we present ourselves. Our style may evolve with time and changing lifestyles, yet with a little knowledge and inspiration, we can all continue to have fun with fashion. As women of a certain age we are a growing demographic let us prove that we can also be a chic one.

  • I was there last August when it was terribly hot, but soooooooooooo interesting! My husband and I spent hours exploring!

  • Love your outfit and all your advices.
It's really amazing to see the glass sculptures from Chihuli.
I saw them two years ago in Atlanta's botanical garden. Beautiful!

  • Didn't realize the sculptures are there through October...I will definitely go in September! You both look so relaxed and happy!!!

  • How nice to see the two of you together, the world is really quite small! I have not been to Kew, ever, and I would love to go. Always been at the wrong end of the country. If I had a bucket list, it would be on it. Meanwhile, I shall continue with my own garden and dream.
Good footwear vital on days like this but style can still be part of the process.
